Preparing for Winter

Fall is almost over, I can’t believe it! Soon winter will be here and I’m not even halfway prepared. I suffer from seasonal depression and it was one of the things that contributed to my mental breakdown this past February. I have other issues that I am getting help for, but this is a primary stress issue for me so I want to be prepared. Exercise during the winter for me is vital. Vital. Keeping my weight down is one thing but during the winter my main motivation is that exercise helps keep me sane and grounded. The sunlight especially is what I need, so I have to make sure to go outside for a walk at least 30 minutes a day during winter.

I live in Northeast Ohio, Usa, right by Lake Erie. It gets brutally cold here! We’ve been very lucky this year because we are having a great fall, very mild. It did not snow at all here this past November, which is always a good sign. That shortens a great deal the amount of snow and icy weather I have to live through. Maybe this winter season we’ll get extra lucky and only have 3 months of winter i.e December, January, and February, with spring actually happening in March. Usually though, here winter begins (real winter, not calendar winter) in November and runs through to early April. Yes, I have lived through winters that were from November to April!!! and people wonder why I get depressed LOL. 6 months of winter is nuts, it truly is.

So first off I need to get my winter gear together. I have a snowsuit and a nice coat, but my coat does not have a hood. That bothered me last winter. I think I will donate it to goodwill or maybe sell it on ebay. I know just what coat I am going to get, it’s a fleece coat I got for my husband a few years ago. Very thick and warm and has a generous hood (I have a lot of hair). I have been borrowing it from him since he got it! So I am going to get my own just like it. I need a thicker scarf, I will make that. I need some more thick fluffy socks! And more leggings and thick knee socks as I’m down to only 1 pair of those now. A pair of thermal underwear, and some cotton tee shirts. Some arm warmers, I will make those. Some turtlenecks and sweaters, I will get a bunch from the thrift store. The ones I had were too form fitting so I cut them up for fabric to use in my quilts. I will get some mens’ sweaters because they are loose and comfortable and won’t show all my business.

Lastly and most importantly, I need boots. I had a great pair I used for years and years, but they started to leak last year so now I need a new pair. I will look around. Boot suggestions welcome! Keep in mind I never heels and am looking for something great to tromp around the snow in.
