Freudian Foot Issues

Sigh. I’m having foot issues again. This time I stubbed my right foot so badly it broke one of my toes clean in two. That was two weeks ago, I have another 2-4 weeks before it’s fully healed. I have to wear a boot brace and walk on crutches when I don’t wear it, in order to stay off the foot completely. It’s very tedious and tiring, and my toes hurts all the time. The doctor gave me a prescription for pain medications but they make me very drowsy and out of it so I don’t like to take them. The whole thing is aggravating my nerves. I’m really pissed with myself because last summer I sprained my left ankle really bad. What does it mean that I keep hurting my feet area?

I hope the doc clears me ok to run in the half-marathon in September…I really would like to do it. After that maybe I’ll stop running, because the more the I think on it the more I think that perhaps I really don’t like running and/or want to stop running…messing up my feet is an easy way out. But so is simply stopping my running habit. I feel like I know myself fairly well and I’m open to change, so this seems like a bizarre way for me to get myself to stop an activity. Maybe I’m over thinking it…the foot stuff could just all be pure accident and coincidence, nothing more.

Natural Medicine Talk

Regular visitors know I am very much into natural health care as part of my overall fitness outlook. I found this site Natural Medicine Talk that is pretty cool; it’s a message board for folks into this stuff to come talk about natural health remedies. Some of it is pretty out there in left field…I don’t mean that in a disparaging way but that a lot of the discussions contain information I will have to do more research on to determine if it’s valid or not. I’m especially interested in the threads on dental care, as I have many dental issues and dread going to the dentist. If there are some alternative things I can do I’m all for that!

Making Goal Weight a Challenge

So I’m giving myself 90 days to hit my goal weight of 130 pounds. I started June 5th, which means I should be at goal August 5th. I started at 170 so I have 40 pounds to lose in 3 months. It sounds like a lot but it’s just a little over 13 pounds a month, which I know is doable because I tend to carry a lot of water weight. Today, June 7th, I’m at 168. I already lost 2 pounds! which is very exciting. My plan is to hit the gym 5 days a week and to the elliptical machine, also 2 of those gym days will add a spinning class. Food-wise I’m going to eat 5 small meals a day and no eating after dinner, period. and of course lots of water!

I’m in therapy and taking St. John’s wort for the depression that caused me to pile the pounds back on, so I feel confident that this weight loss will stick.

Scheduled Fasting Day

I recently joined an online fasting support group run by my friend Jasai called Fast Girls. From the site:

Fast Girls: A Community of women calling on the timeless tradition and wisdom of fasting to strengthen, mind, body and spirit.

Our weekly communal fast takes place from sunrise on Mondays to sunrise on Tuesdays.

Please note that FastGirls is not a dieting or weight management community. We believe that when undertaking any weight management program, there should be as much emphasis on the quality and quantity of what goes in the body as what does not. Although regular fasting may well have an obvious effect on your weight it is our mission to experience this practice as an opportunity to learn lessons about ourselves that go beyond the physical.
http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/FastGirls/

Out scheduled fasting day is Mondays but I’ve been inconsistent with it. I think my mind is finally in a place where I can commit to regular fasting…I would like to use it as a way to learn more about my boundaries and what I am capable of.

Need to Get Back to the Gym

I have got to get back to the gym; working the elliptical machine really is a HUGE fat burner. It’s a high calorie burn workout and very easy on my knees. Still no new shoes yet, I’ve been so busy no time to shop. I hope to get some this weekend. Will definitely post a pic! Oh yah and I’ve lost 3 pounds since last check in, yay!

Today’s health/fitness goals:
30 minutes yoga
Run 5 miles
120 oz. water
Raw veggies for snacks
Raw fruit for dessert
One serving meals, no seconds
No salt added to food
Brush & floss after every meal
Bedtime when sleepy, wake up 5am
40 pounds to goal weight!

Hot Pink Running Shoes

Someone mentioned to me to get hot pink running shoes. I really like this idea…pink is my favorite color, but I rarely wear it on clothes because it does not flatter my coloring. But shoes is another thing, and I would love to see that hot pink flashing on my feet! I always tend to get whatever is on sale too, and it usually is the plainer shoes. I am inspired! :)

Endorphins

I have a love/hate relationship with exercise. I hate doing it, I hate starting it, but I LOVE the way it makes me feel. When I get that endorphin rush, it feels just like right after orgasm, that full, flushed, satisfied feeling of goodness and satiation. I just feel so good, and relaxed, and tingly, and calm. And it lasts for a long time! this feeling, for just hours and hours. Exercise really makes a huge difference in my day. In my life.

My favorite exercise is running, then yoga, then the elliptical machine. Today is a 5 mile run, tomorrow, 3 miles, then friday will hit the gym and do the elliptical. I’ve been doing yoga at home for years now but recently (as part of my getting over shyness plan) found a studio and signed up for classes, went to the first one yesterday. It was grand, the teacher is really nice and grounded and the other students were really welcoming and friendly. One of the women I talked to is also running in the Cleveland marathon this year, and it was nice to talk about running with someone who shares this enthusiasm.

How about you, what gets you going?

Food Triggers

I have food triggers. There are certain foods that cause me to just lose it, to just say ‘bump it’ and start stuffing my face. Last year I got most of them under control, for example I can now really eat just a handful of potato chips or a small bowl of ice cream. But there are a few still lingering on:

peanut butter
pizza
rice & seaweed

I simply cannot eat peanut butter, it is like blood to a shark. I have no idea why, there must be something comforting, some extreme association with safety and warmth or something, that makes it so appealing to me. I don’t even really like peanut butter! I mean the taste is ok, but there are plenty of things I would much rather eat. But this food just makes me lose it, entirely. I’ve been on a peanut butter strike for a while, but I’d like to one day eat it again. I recently went on a pizza strike as well. The rice & seaweed is not so bad, it’s healthy low fat food but I can pack in so much of it in just one sitting…that’s a lot of carbs. Basically I can limit myself to just one serving of rice, but if I go a teaspoon over it my mind is like fuck it! excuse my language and I just go to town. Rice and seaweed is not only tasty, it feels good going down, like it makes my blood sing.

Do you have food triggers? How do you handle this issue? What are your coping skills? I would like to not be addicted to certain foods, for sure.

Pizza Angst

Trula Supple Mama.com

Had a toasted veggie sub for dinner while husband and sons had pizza. I really really really really really really really really really really really really wanted a slice, and would have gotten one…if. If I could stop at one slice! But not sure if I could, kinda shaky on that. I’m losing weight again and don’t want to lose any ground.

I just have to hold tight to my reasons for getting to a healthy weight. I am one fat attack away from diabetes, hypertension, all sorts of health issues that plague many in my family. PLUS at a healthy weight I can run! without all that fat pressure hurting my knees.

Marathon Mommy!

I just discovered Marathon Mommy, a blog about mothers who run marathons. I’m so excited to come across this blog, because as you know I’m a mama and I like to run and this year I’m doing the Cleveland Rite Aid marathon. The last post asked, Why do you run? Well I run because:

-it is fun
-it makes me feel good
-it makes me breathe deeper
-it releases stress
-it’s free
-it increases my metabolism
-it helps me lose weight
-it makes me think better; clearer

Energy & Sleep

I have to get at least 6 hours or I am low-energy the next day. I aim for 8 but feel great at 6-7 hours. I used to be a chronic insomniac!!! and ‘got by’ on 4 hours or less usually.

I need to make sure I am eating right, too. I try to eat fresh fruit and raw veggies every day, and drink lots of water, like at last 60 oz of water.

Challenging Myself to Keep Up

I have really let winter depression get ahold of me, most notably in not sticking to my exercise routine. I know that is one of the sure things to keep me abreast of this funk, that and getting outside each and every day for sunlight. Today I have gone outside and strolled around, but not in any real way what anyone would call exercise. I’m going to go out again today and really stomp around for 30 minutes after work.

Eat More, Not Less

A typical diet is what, about 1500 calories a day. Oh no, that will not work for me. 1500 calories is not enough food for a woman to eat in a day. This causes a great deal of fatigue when you run your body with not enough fuel. If you eat more, I promise you, you will not only feel better, you will also lose weight faster and easier. When you don’t eat enough it slows your body down and you feel bad. When you eat enough calories that are healthy food, naturally low in fat, you will physically feel better and your body will dig into your stored fat and burn it for fuel and you will lose that overweight. Diets eventually work (and some can even work fast i.e make you lose lots of water weight) BUT since they slow your metabolism your body holds onto that stored fat for dear life.

If you are not eating enough during the day it makes it much much harder to resist junk foods and other low-quality foods that are high in fat. First thing, you need to start eating a big breakfast every day, a quality breakfast that is high in protein and low in fat, like oatmeal or scrambled eggs. But even if you eat something high fat it’s better eating it at breakfast than at night. Buttered toast in the morning is usually burned as fuel during the day; buttered bread at dinner is usually stored as fat. The soda and junk food in general, don’t buy it and you can’t consume it. I’ve fallen prey to the junk at work thing too, the best defense is to bring plenty of good, healthy, low-fat quality food to eat. air-popped popcorn, fresh fruit, raw veggies like carrots, boiled eggs, nuts, are all good quality food to bring to work. Then when you get home, you’re not so stressed and hungry you lose it. and water! drink lots of water during the day, that helps a great deal too.

Weight Training 101

I’m aiming on getting stronger, as I am very weak physically. It’s like once my kids got older and I no longer had to haul toddlers around I lost my upper body strength. My current workout schedule is running 3 days a week, walking 3 days, resting 1 day, light yoga every day. Although my rest day I’m generally getting a good workout doing housework!! aaaaaaaa. So anyway on the walking days, I walk 3 miles and the last mile I hold a 2 pound weight in each hand. I have been doing this for a week and I cannot believe how heavy those weights feel, my strength level is really bad.

Does anybody do weight lifting at a gym? and if so, what’s your routine?

Thinking About a Challenge for 2009

In 2007 I did my big weight loss challenge, then in 2008 I did all that training for the half-marathon (but had to miss it cause busted my ankle), so now I’m thinking on what to do for 2009. I still want to do a marathon…I guess I’m going to go for it! That should get me in gear to start running again this winter. I need to be prepared by spring.

This Job Is Turning Me Into a Potato

I had to go to the doctor today because I have had this lingering, nasty cold for the past few weeks. This is going into week 3 so I thought I should check it out. It turned out to be a low grade inner ear infection. Anyway I had to get weighed and OH NO but I have gained some weight back. My home scale is so, oh so broken. I was actually shocked not to mention aghast. Because I have not been overeating and/or eating unhealthy…that much. yes I have fallen into the temptation of junk food at work when pressed for time, but that much? Then again, I’m stuck at my desk all day for 10-hour shifts and what not, it’s not a very active job. I refuse to turn into a potato though, I have come too far and worked too hard for that. I will just have to get up extra early and hit the gym first thing in the morning before work. Planning to do it after work is not working at all and with my limited break time (I kid you not, in a 10 hour shift I get three 10 minute breaks and one 30 minute lunch, that’s it) there is not much time to do anything during lunch except walk around the building a few times after quickly scarfing down my lunch.

I was watching Oprah the other week and she had Dr. Oz on talking about places in the world that have a high proportion of healthy elderly people. In all these places, the way the people lived, just going about their business was a full and physically active life. They made most of their food from scratch, they grew food, they chopped wood, they washed clothes, they bent and lifted and carried heavy things on the daily. In this one village just doing things to survive was equal to several hours in the gym every day. Their 90 year olds were comparable in condition to American 40 year olds, it was wild.

It’s not feasible for me to live my life completely in that way, but there has got to be a middle ground between that and this potato-inducing, desk-bound, low-activity job that’s turning my metabolism to sludge. I am not the one, because with my family health history (on both sides!) I am one fat attack away from all sorts of obesity-triggered health problems including heart disease, diabetes, thyroid problems, and more.

Phooey. I think I burned off five pounds due to fury alone seeing my weight at the docs, I’m so serious. It’s on.

Walking & Light

It’s heading into winter here so the days are getting shorter and shorter. On the days I have to work at my job, I’m going to start walking during my lunch because it’s the only time I’ll have to get sunlight as I leave for work in the morning and back at night. Basically all you need is 15-30 minutes of direct sunlight every day. As I also tend to suffer from winter depression due to decreased sunlight as well as still needing to lose weight, this is of added importance to me. So since I only get a 30 minute lunch, I will have to quickly eat something then head on out.

Food-Specific Fantasies.

I’ve been working so much, I’m either at my job or at my store, that I often don’t eat right/eat enough. I have got to get on track with that. So I find myself having these intense longings for food I don’t even eat much, like yesterday at work I was totally fiending for stick pretzels. You know how sometimes 2 of them are stuck together? I wanted those, just those. Cracked myself up!
