I have food triggers. There are certain foods that cause me to just lose it, to just say ‘bump it’ and start stuffing my face. Last year I got most of them under control, for example I can now really eat just a handful of potato chips or a small bowl of ice cream. But there are a few still lingering on:

peanut butter
pizza
rice & seaweed

I simply cannot eat peanut butter, it is like blood to a shark. I have no idea why, there must be something comforting, some extreme association with safety and warmth or something, that makes it so appealing to me. I don’t even really like peanut butter! I mean the taste is ok, but there are plenty of things I would much rather eat. But this food just makes me lose it, entirely. I’ve been on a peanut butter strike for a while, but I’d like to one day eat it again. I recently went on a pizza strike as well. The rice & seaweed is not so bad, it’s healthy low fat food but I can pack in so much of it in just one sitting…that’s a lot of carbs. Basically I can limit myself to just one serving of rice, but if I go a teaspoon over it my mind is like fuck it! excuse my language and I just go to town. Rice and seaweed is not only tasty, it feels good going down, like it makes my blood sing.

Do you have food triggers? How do you handle this issue? What are your coping skills? I would like to not be addicted to certain foods, for sure.

I am not on any kind of diet. I have bad experiences with diets. Diets reduce calorie intake thus trigger your body into losing weight, that’s true. But then after I went off whatever diet, because I went right back to overeating and also because my body was in shock after getting too few calories for a while, I gained the weight right back and then some.

I also learned that on diets the weight that is lost tends to be muscle, not fat. However, when that weight is gained back, that muscle lost tends to be replaced by fat! So not only did I gain the excess weight I lost back, I also lost needed muscle and gained more fat. Eeeeeeegads.

So if I don’t diet, what do I do now that helps my body resolve to it’s optimal weight? I eat lots and lots of healthy, low-salt, naturally low-fat food. A typical example of my daily food:

Breakfast:
mint, blueberry, or other herbal tea with honey
2 boiled chicken eggs
1 toasted home-made bagel
1 sliced pink grapefruit
Roasted sliced 1/2 eggplant or 1 potato
homemade fruit juice or a small glass of commercial orange juice
a big glass of water

Morning Snack:
an apple/orange/peach/other fruit
air-popped popcorn or 2 rice cakes
baggie of carrots/sliced green pepper/some other raw veggie
mint, blueberry, or other herbal tea with honey
big glass water

Lunch:
Home-made veggie wrap (white or brown rice, tomato, cucumber, bell pepper, garlic, roasted tofu strips, with teaspoon sour cream and taco sauce dressing which is only 3% sodium RDA, all rolled into large tortilla yum yum yum) or some other veggie-protein-carb combo
apple/orange/peach/whatever fruit (usually apple cause it’s free; our tree is in season now)
big salad with low-salt dressing
mint, blueberry, or other herbal tea with honey
big glass water

Afternoon Snack:
baggie of homemade trail mix (nuts, raisins, dates, etc)
air-popped popcorn or 2 rice cakes
baggie of carrots or some other raw fruit
mint, blueberry, or other herbal tea with honey
big glass water

Dinner:
big salad
baked potato
bean dish like black beans & rice, chili, etc
dessert raw fruit, usually cantaloupe, grapes, or some kind of berry like strawberries
3-4 times a week also 1 glass of wine or beer
big glass of water
big glass of juice

Late Night Snack:
I try not to eat after dinner but if I’m in the grip of it, a baggie of emergency carrots ™ or some other raw vegetable. and a glass of water.

Early Morning Snack:
see late night snack

In the Car Snack:
see late night snack

I don’t count calories (because for me, that way leads to madness ha ha) but I tend to stick to portion sizes. I have an extreme salt sensitivity (it makes me puff up like a blow fish & feel terrible) so I don’t eat anything that is over 5% sodium RDA per portion. I love to eat (who doesn’t love food??) and I eat until I get full. Then I stop and go do something else. Especially after dinner, dinner is my trigger-to-overeat meal. I generally get up and go for a walk right after eating dinner; that helps.

On building muscle: Because of my very curvy body shape (round behind, thick thighs) I always assumed I was muscular so didn’t pay attention to building/maintaining my muscle mass. But I always wondered why, if I’m so muscular, I’m so physically weak. It’s because I have less actual muscle than I thought. I’ve been meaning to get back into the gym regularly to do some strength-training, it’s something I really need. It will increase my strength, boost my metabolism, and help my bones also. No more excuses!

How about you, what’s your daily food like? What do you do to maintain/build muscle?

Since my ankle has been busted I’ve gained gained 3 pounds! because I haven’t been able to exercise and just been sitting around. Also I’ve been snacking on fattening non-nutritious things like potato chips. 3 pounds doesn’t sound like a big deal but you may recall my Fitness Challenge of 2007…if so you know how hard I worked to lose all that weight and the changes I had to make to how I ate and exercised.

I still have 25 pounds to lose to hit my goal, and I am determined to make it. This is a delicious snack and has 0 fat, high in Vitamin C, other vitamins and minerals, and antioxidants. and delicious! and, NO SALT which is my big stumbling block.

Oh my, I have been slacking off and sometimes over eating, which has resulted in me gaining back 4 pounds since last check-in. I have no excuses and anyway if I did, they’re really not valid. So, back into training. The past couple of weeks I have been running but not consistently or frequently; only 4 runs in the last 12 days or so. It has been snowing a lot here; some days so heavily I really could not drive to the gym nor felt it was safe to go running outside. However I still could and can exercise indoors. Today I did a 3mile power walk Leslie Sansone video, then her 1mile run.

A major change I’m doing with my routine is adding yoga right before bedtime as well as first thing in the morning. As you probably know I do yoga both to de-stress as well as for exercise. I’ve been working a lot lately and have quite a bit on my mind, so I think this will help a lot both for fitness and inner peace. A major change I’m doing with food is changing my cut-off eating time to 7pm from 8pm. I found myself stuffing quite a bit of food in from 7-8pm, but the way I’m currently working will prevent such stuffing from 6-7pm. Basically it’s a psychological issue so I’m doing whatever I can to psyche myself out from falling back into overeating. Overeating is no longer a way of life for me or a desired option for me anymore.

20 pounds to knock off before the marathon! I can do this

Today’s Health Goals:
Yoga 30 minutes
Walk 3 miles
Run 1 mile
Drink 120 oz water
One serving meals, seconds declined
Minimal salt added to food
Raw veggies for snacks, apple for dessert
Food cut-off time: 7pm
Brush & floss after every meal
Today’s weigh-in: 150 pounds
Weight Goal: 130 pounds

I’ve heard about some actresses, singers, models and other women who work in entertainment that keep themselves on a strict diet every day except for a once-a-month splurge. One day out of the month they allow themselves to eat whatever they want. I actually thought about doing this, until I realized that it goes against everything I’m trying to learn about food and eating. It was my problems with overeating that caused me to gain so much weight in the first place. Part of why I overeat was because I used food as a solace and a reward. By using this method of eating I would still be using food as a reward. I also this would cause me to fixate on food and ‘that day’ I could eat lots of junk and stuff myself. Stuffing myself is no longer something I want to do or something I want to see as in any way rewarding. It is also my hope that one day I will no longer be enticed by junk food to the point where junk food triggers me into overeating. So no once-a-month splurge for me!
