Slow Weight Loss Sucks

I am trying to stay upbeat and positive but my weight loss is at a crawl now compared to how it was when I first started. I weighed in this morning at 141.5, which means eleven pounds to go. At this rate I’ll be at my goal weight by, I don’t know, CHRISTMAS.

Ok I’m going to change my negative attitude, because I think that’s affecting my weight loss. I need to be honest with myself about this. I have been doing things that affect my weight like eating after dinner. I have not been doing things that affect my weight like skipping daily exercise. I understand this, and need to get back on track. I am confident once I do, these last eleven pounds will drop right off.

Today’s Goals
30 minutes yoga
4 mile brisk walk
120 oz. water
One serving meals, no seconds
No salt added to food
Raw veggies for snacks, Raw fruit for dessert
Brush & floss after every meal
Bedtime when sleepy, Wakeup 5am
Today’s Weight – 141.5 pounds

Dropped the Half Pound!

I was whining about in my last post, LOL. Weighed in this morning at 145.5! Fifteen pounds to go. I hope to be at my goal weight by the end of August.

My knees hurt from running yesterday, I think I overdid it. I’m not going to run today but I will do a brisk walk later on today. Food-wise I’m doing good. Saturdays I tend to eat very light because on Friday we also have tofu stir-fry, which has a lot of fat. Today I’m eating a lot of fruit and raw veggies from the garden. For dinner I’m thinking a light pasta and sauce.

Today’s Goals
30 minutes yoga
4 mile brisk walk
120 oz. water
One serving meals, no seconds
No salt added to food
Raw veggies for snacks, Raw fruit for dessert
Brush & floss after every meal
Bedtime when sleepy, Wakeup 5am
Today’s Weight – 145.5 pounds

My Weight Loss has Slowed

Weighed in today 146 again, which means one. pound. lost so far this week. The last 20 pounds is creeping off, egads. I feel like I weigh less now than I did this morning, just a smidge, so maybe by tomorrow I will have dropped another half pound and I’ll be 145.5

The run today went well, as did yoga. I was just plodding along, though, I didn’t even break a sweat and it was a 2 mile run. It took me nearly 30 minutes to run it, which should give you some idea about how slow I ran. Tomorrow will be better, I’m just proud of myself for doing it.

Today is stirfry Friday, which means I’m gonna hit the gym after dinner!

Today’s Goals
30 minutes yoga
2 mile run
45 minutes elliptical
120 oz. water
One serving meals, no seconds
No salt added to food
Raw veggies for snacks, Raw fruit for dessert
Brush & floss after every meal
Bedtime when sleepy, Wakeup 5am
Today’s Weight – 146 pounds

I Am Not Going to Be Fat Again

It feels a little strange to ‘only’ have 17 pounds to lose compared with before. But I realize I still have to bring the same level of intensity to my workouts and the same frame of mind regarding food if I truly want to get the rest of this weight off me. It’s kind of hard because I’m not getting the same kind of support…now I have both strangers and friends telling me that I don’t need to lose any more weight and that I look fine just the way I am now. They say things like You don’t want your ribs to show! or Don’t you want to look like a real woman!

I am not certain why they think that at 5’6 and 130 pounds my ribs would show or I would look gaunt. When I was this weight years and years ago my ribs did not show and I did not look sickly or too skinny. I also wonder why they think being trim and fit would mean I no longer looked like a ‘real’ woman. Are only fat women ‘real’ women??? What does this mean, that I have to overeat and resume a low activity lifestyle in order to be ‘real’? Because that is why I was fat. I don’t know about anybody else who is overweight, but that is why I was fat. And I am not going to be fat again for anybody.

Today’s Goals
30 minutes yoga
45 minutes elliptical
120 oz. water
One serving meals, no seconds
No salt added to food
Raw veggies for snacks, Raw fruit for dessert
Bedtime when sleepy, Wakeup 5am
Today’s Weight – 147 pounds

25 Week Fitness Challenge: Week 25, Day 173, Last Day!

Today is the last day of my 25 Week Fitness Challenge 2007! I weighed in this morning at 147…Seventeen pounds from my goal of 130 pounds. So I guess I will be cleaning out the basement by myself!

I actually am quite pleased with where I am at. I lost 63 pounds! and maybe aiming to lose 80 pounds in 25 weeks was a bit much. My weight loss was so fast in the beginning it seemed reasonable to me, but it slowed down the more weight I lost. Especially the last 3-4 weeks. I’m giving myself 9 weeks to lose the rest of the weight. So that gives me until August 25th as the new date. I’m setting it as a new goal.

I’m doing the 2007 MS “Pedal to the Point” Bike Ride
http://www.msohiobike.org/ so I decided to take up spinning again to help train for it. I’ve been street biking so-so for the last few months, so I think I can at least do the one-day ride. That’s only 35 miles and it’s for a great cause. I went to spinning this morning at the Y and it was really challenging, but felt great. I wore my calorie and heart monitor, and was surprised to see that I only burned 318 calories in a 45 minute spinning class! When I first started spinning I would burn over 600 calories, humph. Then again I was over 200 pounds then, so of course I burned way more calories being way heavier.

Today’s Goals
30 minutes yoga
45 minutes spinning class
30 minutes walk on treadmill
120 oz. water
One serving meals, no seconds
No salt added to food
Raw veggies for snacks, Raw fruit for dessert
Bedtime when sleepy, Wakeup 5am
Total Weight Loss – 63 pounds

About Trula & Supple Mama

Hello there, I’m Trula Breckenridge and this is my fitness & weight loss blog. I’m a 36 year old woman who lives in a suburb of Cleveland, Ohio. I’m a mother of 3 children, ages 19, 13, and 10, and like many mothers I struggled with losing weight after having children. In 2004 I wrote a book titled Supple Mama: Fitness, Nutrition, and Healthy Body Image for Moms, with an emphasis on mothers getting a healthy body image. I re-released it last year with additional info on nutrition including healthy portion sizes.

To my chagrin a whole lot of my own advice and research went out the window last year as I grappled with some serious family issues and other personal challenges. My weight skyrocketed to over 200 pounds! At my heaviest I was 210 pounds. I am only 5 feet 6 inches in height. On January 2nd, 2007 I began my fitness challenge, and I haven’t looked back. Since then I have lost 10 24 37 42 53 70 pounds, gained some back and am now working on losing the last 25 pounds for good. I am surely going to reach my goal of 130 pounds. The photos are all me from a period between December 2006 to present, so you get to see me shrink fro 210 pounds to my goal weight of 130 pounds.

People had been telling me I should start a weight loss blog but I wanted it to be more than a vehicle to sell my book. I have the book’s store page linked, sure, but all the articles and blog posts I’ve written here are free to help you with your own weight loss journey. If you don’t have time to read a long post, bookmark it and come back to it. You can also print up any post, just click the # symbol that’s beneath every post to get it to open in it’s own page. I did not start this blog until I felt ready and able to share my experience with overeating and exercise issue in a compassionate manner.

I am on a mission with this blog to help other people free themselves from food addiction, aversion to exercise, and other issues that keep us physically overweight and emotionally sick inside. It is ok to want to be fit and healthy. If you want to change your outlook about being overweight and take responsibility for your weight and health issues caused by excess fat, this blog is for you! The Supple Mama blog will help you change not only your body but your very life.

Jump in with your comments any time but it’s ok to just read, too. You can also get updates to this blog by RSS feed and by email subscription, just click on the selection in the left column, right at the top. I add my own exercise and food goals almost daily. Yes, I have a lot to share with you! I would love to hear from you and get your feedback on this blog, so drop me a line sometime. My email is trubreck at gmail dot com. Also, if you have a weight loss and/or fitness blog let me know so I can link it to Supple Mama and please link me also. Thanks for coming by and keep working towards your fitness goals! You can do it! I have so much confidence in you.

25-Week Fitness Challenge: Week 18, Day 122

I practice Iyengar yoga, and it is such a pleasing way to begin the day. I think of all the things I have done in an effort to grow as a person, doing yoga has been one of the most beneficial to my personality. It is very calming and soothing to my soul. As recently as last year I would have described myself as a naturally nervous, anxious person; easily flustered and even high strung. Now I have come to realize that there in nothing ‘natural’ about these characteristics at all within myself, they are the result of learned coping skills from childhood that became habitual. I feel now that I am ‘naturally’ a person who is calm, slow to anger, and easy-going. I have learned to be, in large part because I choose to dedicate a half hour of my morning to yoga. Oh yeah and there’s the physical benefit of being more limber and leaner. Weighed in this morning at 159 pounds even.

Today is a running day and it went well, I shaved 9 seconds off my last time. It took me 13 minutes and 51 seconds to run one mile. Still nearly two minutes over my walking speed, but it’s progress. S-bop forgot his lunch so I decided to bike to his school as fast as I could to get an extra workout in. It’s a mile and a half away from the house so that’s 3 miles in total (coming and going) I biked today. I was thinking about going to Spinning class tonight but since I got 3 miles of biking in, I may just stay home and do some writing.

Today’s Goals:
30 minutes yoga
Run one mile (time today 13 minutes 51 seconds)
Bike 3 miles
120 oz. water
One serving meals, no seconds
Raw veggies for snacks
Raw fruit for dessert
Bedtime when sleepy/Wakeup 5am
Weightloss so far – 51 pounds

25-Week Fitness Challenge: Week 18, Day 120

I went running! I have been waiting and waiting to start running again since the beginning of the challenge in January! I was too heavy then, 210 pounds, and since I have a lot of weight naturally on my thighs/bottom and then had so much excess fat there as well, I thought it best to wait until I lost a bit of weight before attempting to run again. I didn’t feel it would be good for my knees to run with so much excess weight. 160 was my target weight for running. I weighed in this morning 159.5 again, so I decided today is the day. I took off as soon as t-bop was on the school bus.

It went great! My legs felt a little leaden within a few minutes but I kept on and then the leaden feeling went away and they felt light as a feather. I told myself since it’s been so long since I ran I would allow myself to stop at any time, but I ended up not having to stop. I made sure to take deep breaths in through my nose and out through my mouth, and kept my visualization up. I ran a mile and it took me 14 minutes, which makes it official…I can walk faster than I can run, LOL! but I am confident I will get faster. I’m going to start running a mile every other morning. It felt awesome! I broke into a light sweat and felt very euphoric afterwards. It’s a quite different feeling from working out indoors, must be the fresh air and wind in my face

Today’s Goals!
30 minutes yoga
Run 1 mile – today’s time 14 minutes
30 minutes elliptical
120 oz. waterOne serving meals, no seconds
No salt added to food
Raw veggies for snacks
Raw fruit for dessert
Bedtime when I get sleepy (I’m following this new sleep plan/Wakeup 5am

25-Week Fitness Challenge: Week 17, Day 115

I am still taking it easy from my massive period this week. I usually have a very light flow that only lasts 4 days including dry up, so this 7 day, heavy flow period was a shock, have mercy. But my six pounds of water bloat is dropping off nicely, I weighed in this morning at 163.5. I may even be down to 162 again by tomorrow at this rate.

I’m going to the Y tonight and doing 30 minutes on the elliptical, and I may sit in the sauna for a few minutes beforehand, I don’t know. The thought of sitting in the sauna right now seems very unappealing. I did my yoga this morning and went for a walk. I will go for a short walk later this afternoon.

Today’s Goals:
30 minutes yoga
30 minutes elliptical
120 oz. water
One serving meals, no seconds
No salt added to food
Raw veggies for snacks
Raw fruit for dessert
Brush and floss after every meal
Bedtime 10pm/Wakeup 6am
Weightloss so far – 46.5 pounds

Weight Loss Meals

I did say I was going to list my meals. Ok:

Breakfast – Big bowl of oatmeal with applesauce this morning and cooked in peach mango juice. Yum yum yum. I licked the bowl it was so good, hell to the yeah! Glad nobody was around to see that tee hee! Water, big glass and more mango peach juice, small glass.

Snack – Baggie of carrots, green pepper, and celery. mostly celery. It was kinda blah. The tart of the celery played off nicely against the sweet of the carrots though. Water, big glass

Snack 2 – an hour later I had a fit! and felt like I had to eat something right then or else. I really hate that panicky feeling, what in the underworld! So I told myself, Look here Mercury you had a big old bowl of piping hot delicious filling oatmeal, then a big bag of carrots and celery and green pepper, you simply cannot be hungry. You are not hungry! But then my logical self got jumped by my illogical self who held me down and demanded that I eat something right now. What could I do, she was going to beat me up or something. So I thrust some emergency carrots in her face and she ate most of the baggie. Then she got quiet and went off somewhere. Man, if I knew where she lived I’d put her ass out.

Lunch – Veggie burger on wheat bread with sauteed onion, peas, and tater tots. I had enough peas to fit in my palm and enough tater tots to fit in my palm, which doesn’t seem like much but it was more than enough lunch. My illogical self started muttering but I ate slowly and calmly and talked her through it. By the end of lunch she agreed with me that lo and behold, a handful of tater tots was quite satisfying! but could she have more peas, please. No! I told her, you talk yourself into seconds on one, you’ll talk yourself into seconds on everything. Have some water.

Snack – I really want something sweet, but I don’t think I can handle that well just yet. I’m going to have some tomatoes and carrots. the tomatos were forced grown by a friend of mine and they taste about as blah as you’d expect tomatoes not grown in real sunlight to taste, but I think when I sprinkle a little basil on the slices they’ll taste better.

Dinner – Tofu Stirfry with rice!! I am having one small bowl…with about 10 pieces of fried tofu in it, LOL. Ok just 5, seeing as how I want to be 189 ASAP and all. Also includes broccoli, carrots, snow peas, onion, water chestnuts. Water, big glass, beer, 1 bottle :)

Dessert – a box of raisins, you know the kind you get to put in your kids’ lunches! and an apple. Water, small glass.

and water while exercising!

20 – Week Fitness Challenge: Week 3, Day 14

We have a lot of running around today, going to a few events in honor of Dr. King. I’ve done my yoga and jumping rope and walked 4,102 steps, I am sure I will get the rest in during all the walking around today.

My psychological hunger seems to have abated a bit. I haven’t had to use emergency carrots in 3 days!! Not only do I not have the urge to eat some fattening food in the middle of the night, I am ready for sleep by my bedtime to want to eat. Yay!

The weight is coming off at a nice clip, roughly half a pound a day seems like. I weigh myself once a day in the morning and I’m glad I do because I don’t see a difference yet. I might have gotten discouraged if I didn’t know I have
actually lost 6.5 pounds so far.

I got into a sorta fight with one of my friends, she is doing some liquid protein diet shake deal and started on the 1st and has lost 15 pounds. Ok, so? It’s not a competition, I told her. She was all, yah but you only lost 6 pounds. I tried to be nice because this friend has insecurity issues and is always comparing herself to me and feeling she comes up short. Which is not my fault but I could tell she was really happy to be ‘better’ than me at something. So I just told her Congratulations and tried to change the subject. But she kept on and on about it So I told her Look Oprah went on a similar diet years ago and got to a size 8, then as soon as she started eating again she gained all that weight back and more because she hadn’t dealt with her issues with overeating and stuff. Ha! my friend said, I knew you were jealous! sigh. I said Call me back when you can talk like you have some sense and hung up on her.
Today’s Goals:
Walk 12,000 steps
1/2 hour yoga
15 minutes jumping rope
No salt added to food
Brush & floss after every meal
10 cups water, 8 oz
One serving meals, no seconds
Raw veggies snacks
Raw fruit dessert
Bedtime 10pm

20 – Week Fitness Challenge: Week 3, Day 13

The Boy Bops have wrestling matches starting at 2 today so I will miss my Sunday spinning class. So I’m going to the gym in a few and do the elliptical and stationary bike instead…I’ll try to do the stuff I remember from class. This is cutting into my writing time, but I got up an hour early today and wrote to make up for some of it.

Mercury Man got me this heart rate/calorie monitor thing for my birthday! at first I was like What! um I really wanted some cute workout outfits, LOL. But then I tried it on and was amazed, and decided to keep it. It’s a belt thingy you wrap around your breast bone, that’s the actual monitor. Then it transmits the info to the watch! I like it because now I can know just how many calories I am burning during any activity and my heart rate, both resting and active. It keeps track of other stuff too.

Yesterday at the gym I burned 1372 calories!! I did the elliptical for 45 minutes, treadmill for 30 minutes at 5 mph, and the sit-down leg cycler, I forget what’s called, for 30 minutes. Oh my, I was through. I took a nap for about an hour when we got home, but felt fine for all my birthday festivities. I’m going to take it down a notch and just try to burn at least 700 calories a day in exercise/active labor.

Today’s Goals:
1/2 hour elliptical
1/2 hour bike thingy
No salt added to food
Brush & floss after every meal
10 cups water, 8 oz
One serving meals, no seconds
Raw veggies snacks
Raw fruit dessert
Bedtime 10pm

20 – Week Fitness Challenge: Week 2, Day 7

It has gotten much easier to resist late-night snacking. Redirecting my behavior, doing something else has been extremely helpful. and having my emergency carrots to fall back on if I feel like I have to eat something helps so much.

For breakfast I usually have oatmeal with cut apples or raspberries. It is getting a little hard because oatmeal is one of those foods that is delicious hot, but gets lumpy and sticky as it cools. I like my food not so hot. oh well! I am learning. Smiling

Exercise has gotten easier. I went to spinning class yesterday and it was actually easier even though my legs were still sore. Today I am doing walking and yoga, and since I’ll be at home it will be a little harder to push myself to walk as quickly as I need to without the treadmill settings.

Today’s Goals:

Walk 12,000 steps
Yoga 1/2 hour
Drink 10 cups water
Raw veggies for snacks
Raw fruit for dessert
One serving meals – no seconds
week 1 weight loss: 3 lbs.

20 – Week Fitness Challenge: Week 2, Day 6

wooooooot

Well I just had a handful of chips before my nice breakfast of oatmeal with raspberries. But I am not sweating it because I am proud of myself for stopping at one handful. Chips are one of my trigger foods. I’m glad I ate a little because otherwise I’d be obsessing over them all day then probably break and eat half a bag late at night. This way I ate a little and was done, I don’t want any more!!

A friend of mine had to have surgery last month for an ulcer and she told me she went on and had a tummy tuck also. I was astonished that I felt a little jealous! when she told me…we have similar body shapes and are about equally overweight/out of shape. We had planned to work out a lot together and help each other through, and now she has a flat abdomen while I have at least 3 months before my belly looks like that. egads. But she is a sweetheart and very emphatic and she stressed that she still has food issues and still wants to work out with me after she’s all healed up.

Today another friend is coming with me to spinning class and it will take a lot of effort not to tell her about it. She is also friends with my friend who had surgery but they met through me and are not as close to each other. anyway. After class we’ll probably get something to eat, and if so I’m getting a salad or fruit bowl. I had digestive issues all day yesterday after eating eggs, yuck. It’s just easier for me physically to be vegan.

Today’s goals:
Walk 3 miles
Spinning class at 1pm
10 glasses of water
Brush & floss after every meal
Raw veggies for snacks
Raw fruit for dessert

20 – Week Fitness Challenge: Week 1, Day 5

I made it through the week. Today will be ok, no major temptations. In about an hour I’m going to spinning class, then meet with a trainer to go over the various machines and set a weight training plan, then swimming for about an hour. Then work rest of day until about 11pm, then bed.

Sunday might be rough because one of my friends is coming to spinning class with me…she likes to eat out a lot and will probably suggest we go eat somewhere afterward. If so I will suggest someplace healthy and then halve my serving and wrap up to take home immediately.

Goals for today:
Walk 12,000 steps
Spinning/cycling class
Meet with trainer
10 cups water
No salt added to food!
Raw veggies for snacks
Raw fruit for dessert
Brush and floss after every meal
One serving meals, no seconds

***Later****

It’s about 3:20 my time and since my day will end around 11:30pm tonight this is mid-day for me. Ok so we met up with the trainer and she was very nice!! Showed us everything we needed to do. They have this really cool system called FittLinx where each machine is hooked up to a main computer, then when you go for the first time to a machine you can put in your settings. Then after that all you have to do is log in your ID number and it’ll bring up your settings. Which is really cool because you don’t have to keep track of all that stuff yourself. It even monitors your range of motion and your speed!! which I really need because I have a hard time knowing/understanding that. This way I’ll know how to get the most effective speed for me.

I sat in the sauna which was really great because my legs were kinda sore from spinning class. Then I joined Brian and the Boy Bops in the pool.

Afterwards we went to IHOP!! I planned to order the fruit bowl but I decided to get pancakes and an omelette. It was so much, but I can tell my stomach is already shrinking to normal proportions because even as soon as last week I would have felt hungry again within a half hour and I still feel very very full, I don’t even want/need emergency carrots yet. I’m regretting going off my vegan diet though, I feel kinda ickey from the eggs. My body is so sensitive, egads. I bet if I ate meat (I haven’t eaten meat in 20 years) I’d probably have an instant stroke, LOL. I think I’m going back on the Vegan Path on my 35th birthday next week.

20 – Week Fitness Challenge: Week 1, Day 4

obstacles

my major obstacle is that I have trouble stopping when I am full. it’s like I have to eat until my stomach is distended. I am not an emotional eater so much as I just feel I have to pack in a lot of food, especiall at dinner, just because it is there. my dad survived the Great Depression and was left with a lot of food issues. He would always pile our plates with food and urge seconds. I did not learn about actual portion sizes until I grew up.

Today’s goals:

walk 3 miles
do exercise video
drink 10 glasses water
snacks raw veggies
dessert raw fruit

Dinner is going to be hard because it is Tofu Stirfry, one of my favorite meals. I will have one small bowl with rice. I usually have
3 big bowls. I will do it by redirecting my behaviour. after dinner I will immediately go for a walk. Then drink a big glass of water. Then emergency carrots if need be, and more water. Then I will work on some writing and do stuff for my biz. Then go straight to bed.

my motivation is that losing weight and getting fit will make me healthier. That is my primary motivation. my secondary motivation is that I will be stronger and feel able to do more things, like go on long bike rides with my husband or long swims with my daughter or play a long game of basketball with my sons.

20 – Week Fitness Challenge: Week 1, Day 3

I’m having a lot of psychological hunger though. I was just telling Mercury Man, I can’t be hungry! I just had a big bowl of oatmeal, grrrrr, with raspberries and brown sugar. But I still felt very hungry so I ate some emergency carrots (I keep a bag on my nightstand) and drank another big glass of water. Then I left the house and walked to the library!

I am very sensitive to salt meaning I bloat very easily when I add salt to my food or eat salty foods, my face and ankles especially will get very swollen. But my body responds just as quickly to no salt, too, here’s a pic from yesterday, compare it with the pics from my Kids back to school thread:

Mercury Man says he can’t see a difference but it’s very noticeable to me. Anyway! I had a full night’s sleep so I feel wonderful this morning. I almost pulled another all-nighter because I got all caught up in this book project I’m working on, but I forced myself to stop and go to bed. I am so glad I did.

Early birthday present from Mercury Man, he got us a family membership to the YMCA specifically to help me with exercise. and this way we all can go which is nice. So we’re all going tonight. I’m going to take a spinning class (ibop said she might do the class with me), then afterwards we’re going to swim for a bit. I’m a little nervous because I went to a spinning class a few years ago once and it was very intense. I am psyched about going though and actually looking forward to it. They also have yoga classes!! and a weight room and lots of other stuff. We’re going to go at least 3 times a week because I need to do my spinning workout at least that much. The boys also want to do karate and they have a class right before my spinning class starts, woooooot!
